Kevin Prime is of Ngati Hine, Ngati Whatua, Tainui and Welsh descent. He lives in Motatau with his wife Margaret, and has 13 children and 19 grandchildren.
Kevin was named Conservationist of the Decade in the 1990s and has long been a role model in the community, in roles with various companies, trusts and community organisations in areas relating to philanthropy, health, conservation, justice, Māori development, education, environment, forestry, farming and sport.
He has also served on ministerial advisory groups pertaining to health, forestry, conservation, Māori affairs, environment, crown research institutes, lands and sports. These days he is a beef farmer, forester, beekeeper, conservationist, and Commissioner with the Environment Court.
